As I walked between the tombs tiles clinked beneath my feet in contrast to the silent cemetery within the walls of what is known as La Recoleta. Here within 54843 square meters lies 48000 burial vaults. The thing that stood out to me and is somewhat evident in some of the subsequent photos is that while many of these memorial places are built with marble and furnished with the best materials that could be afforded some seem to be on the point of ruin.I couldn't help but think even though some of these vaults are well maintained the remembrance of these people is forgotten.
Are these places built for the living or the dead?
In these vaults room is often reserved for other family members. Below you can see a coffin the the left beneath the open doors. what you can not see is the stair well that descends deeper into the vault where at least five other coffins rest.
This is something I did not think I would see. If your thinking of getting a casket you may want to buy one that is made well and with a quality hardwood.
This plot stands out like a small grass hut surrounded in a city of skyscrapers.
This cemetery was inaugurated in November 1822
